Finding The Time Isn’t Easy

My son just turned 3 weeks old on Monday.  Saying those 3 weeks went fast is the understatement of the year!  I guess that is what happens when you are living your life in 3 to 4 hours stretches.  Each bottle takes about 20 minutes for Ben to suck down, then another 10 minutes to change him and clean him up.  After that it takes about 15 to 30 minutes to calm him down before he falls back to sleep.  So of each 3 hour stretch, 45 minutes to 1 hour is taken up by feeding and changing.

Writing that in a post makes it sound  like I have a lot of free time to get done what ever needs to be done.   Not so!  Being tired all the time makes my mind move slower so it takes me longer to do things because I can’t concentrate.   I would say over the past 3 weeks, I’ve probably gotten to spend a total of 10 hours working on real estate related items.  That is about a third of the time I normally get to spend, which is 10 hours a week.

Last night I was trying to print out envelopes, stuff and seal them but only got half way through the stack of 100 before Ben started fussing and crying.  Turns out that he had a wet diaper so I changed him, but then he wouldn’t settle down so I spent the next hour trying to figure out why.  I  failed big time.  Lucky me though it was time for another feeding now, so wash, rinse and repeat.  The next thing I know it’s midnight and I have to try and get some sleep.

I am definitely adjusting to life with a baby.  I love it and I thank my wife for being so great because I couldn’t do it with out her.  My real estate stuff is getting done, all be it slowly, and my partner and I are keeping the momentum going.  It is hard work and sometimes you have to just clear your mind and push forward.

  1. Scott,

What an incredible opportunity you have right now. You are forced to focus on what you can accomplish and what you cannot. As your business grows, your time will be limited as well. Take the time now to see what you can outsource.

My little one is almost 6 months old, I am still trying to get better at filling those small 15 minute blocks, but I am much better than I was 6 months ago.

Rest is huge, were still running into some sleepless nights (teething started), but make absolutely sure one of you gets a good night rest. Listen to the advice that everyone else has, try and sleep when Ben does. It helps, although we were slow learners.

Either way, you likely now have a much bigger motivation in front of you. Good Luck.

Hey Jason, nice to hear from you again!

I am definitely going to get a great opportunity to streamline my work to the bare minimum, money making only, tasks. If we close another 2 deals this year I’ll start looking into hiring out the mailings. margins are too tight right now as the passed deal pretty much payed for my marketing this year and since we are only closing one deal per year (over the last two) it’s tough to spend more on marketing if you know what I mean.

How is your investing going? Close any deals lately?

  2. Hey Scott,

Congrats on the new baby! You’ll find that the first few months are crazy and nothing will get done, but as Jason said above, you’ll learn to prioritize, and eventually become a lot more efficient than you’ve ever been.

Of course, once the second one comes along, there’s no hope… 🙂
