I use to watch a lot of TV, probably 4 hours a day or so. It is really easy to do once you get caught up in all the good shows that are on. Once I get invested in a show, the urge to watch just keeps growing and growing. That is why about two years ago I decided to stop watching the ABC, NBC and CBS type sitcoms and dramas. They are never ending and just suck valuable time away from you.
I only watch TV when I’m making and eating dinner and on the weekends with my wife. We DVR the shows that air during the week and watch them on the weekends when we have some down time. Here is my top 10 favorite shows to watch…
- Gold Rush Alaska
- The Walking Dead
- Hell on Wheels
- Shark Tank
- American Pickers
- Auction Wars
- King of Queens
- How I Met Your Mother
I also watch Grey’s Anatomy, but that is only with my wife. I’m invested in that show for 4 years now so I don’t mind watching it even though it’s not the greatest of shows.
For those of you who haven’t seen Shark Tank, it’s really good! It really gives you an idea of how the successful business people of the world think when it comes to investments. Their negotiating tactics are interesting as well. For example, Mark Cuban likes to draw a hard line and tell people to take his offer now or lose it if they choose to hear the other offers. They also really take a hard look at the person bringing in the idea and weigh their traits just as much as the products/ideas. It’s quite interesting for sure!

television. ugh. a mind-rotting waste of time. cut the cable and start reading. non-fiction only. business, philosophy, psychology, sales, marketing, biography, self help, history, economics, investing…there is a whole world out there waiting to be discovered. challenge yourself to read a minimum of half an hour a day. it’s probably the most life-enriching thing you can do for yourself.
Reading is great no doubt and I love reading “self improvement” type books. But to me reading isn’t the mindless relaxation that I need from time to time (like unwinding before bed). Reading gets my brain thinking which doesn’t help me get to sleep, it actually gets me revved up and motivated. This causes me to lie in bed not being able to sleep because my mind is racing! That isn’t good for anyone LOL
You CAN learn a lot from watching TV if you watch the right shows so I wouldn’t dismiss it all together.
yes, you can learn from television, but its far too slow. reading is way more efficient. re: unwinding, relaxing, better sleep, meditation is the trick. i can recommend a couple of good books on the subject… 😉
I will say that reading does help you focus in on what you want to learn, that is for sure. TV sometimes throws me some knowledge that I wasn’t looking for but found very interesting.
So what are your top 3 favorite books?
I used to love Flip This House on A&E, but they haven’t filmed any new episodes in quite a long time. They just started a new house flipping show called Flipping Boston and I’m not a big fan. I’d have to say these are my other favorites:
1. Big Bang Theory
2. Modern Family
3. Happy Endings
4. Breaking Bad
Like you Scott, I used to watch Grey’s Anatomy with my wife, but it got WAY too out of control these past few seasons & I just can’t bring myself to do it anymore. I now watch a lot of the Disney Channel with my 1-year old son (Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Jake and the Neverland Pirates, etc). This will be you soon as well Scott … haha!
Cool list, Scott! 🙂 I just started watching Shark Tank – it’s really interesting. It’s kind of neat to see all these folks presenting their business ideas in front of the “sharks” who show their point of view as well. As for me, I’ve been hooked on The Colony – another interesting show with a very serious “what if” scenario. It kind of started to make me think outside what I know especially with the natural disasters we’ve had these past couple of years. Enjoyed the post, thanks for sharing! 🙂
The Colony huh? I never heard of that. I will have to look into that it sounds interesting. Thanks Rachel
